The
second Plate Semi-Final would see Fylde FC Old
Boys versus Flying High. Fylde FC Old Boys were
aiming to reach a third Plate Final in our events.
Flying High had reached the Plate for the third
time in their history and this Semi-Final equalled
the furthest stage they had reached (equal with
the 2016 Riga Tournament). Could they go one
step further and reach the Plate Final for the
first time?
These
two teams hadmet earlier in the day and on that
occasion it was a relatively comfortable 3-0
win for Fylde FC Old Boys (Nathaniel Smithies
x2, Michael Fee). As with the Quarter-Final,
Fylde FC Old Boys were looking for a repeat
victory against a team who was gunning for revenge
against them. We also had a familiar tale whereby
Fylde FC Old Boys found themselves trailing
at the break. Aaron Brookes was the man on target
that gave Flying High a crucial lead and just
one half of football away from the final. Fylde
FC Old Boys had recovered from 2-0 down in the
Quarters and they were to recover again here.
Ramzy Elftesi had scored the equalizer in the
previous round and he was to repeat the feat
here. There was remarkable symmetry on display.
The match would finish 1-1 and so we had a penalty
shootout for the second time today.
This
was a first penalty shootout for Flying High
in our events and the first for Fylde FC Old
Boys since about 45 minutes ago. Fylde FC Old
Boys would strike first and Michael Fee got
them off to the perfect start, 1-0. Andrew Ford
had 4 goals in the tournament and was on target
to level it up at 1-1. Ramzy Elftesi put Fylde
FC Old Boys 2-1 up as they stuck with the penalty
lineup that had proved successful in the last
round. Jacob Lovely was next man up for Flying
High but he failed to score and Fylde FC Old
Boys were one kick away from the final.
A
change to the order meant Billy Crow stepping
forward instead of Nathaniel Smithies but it
mattered not as Crow was successful in finding
the back of the net. Fylde FC Old Boys were
proving to be maestros at spot kicks and they
advanced to a second successive Plate Final.
For Flying
High it was a case of close but no cigar. They
could not have come much closer to reaching
that first European final. Hopefully this experience
will put them in good stead to get over the
line next time.
