The 2025 eurofootballfives.com season kicked off on the 10th May in the wonderful city of Porto. It was our 19th consecutive season in Europe and our 139th tournament weekend on the continent. A big thank you to all the teams who have supported us over the years.

Porto - 'Portugal's second city', set picturesquely astride the River Douro in Northern Portugal – became our 3rd destination in Portugal and our 17th in Europe as recently as October 2024. We loved this fascinating and vibrant city so much we couldn't wait to return.

Porto is a contradiction in that it is an old historic city but also a young and lively city (especially at night). By day you can explore the cobbled medieval streets and by night enjoy your beers as people spill out onto the streets from the bustling pubs and bars. Once you hit midnight, the club scene comes alive as you party until breakfast.

The opening match of the 2025 Porto Sixes Tournament featured experienced team Fylde FC Old Boys and newcomers Berkshirelona FC. We'll preview the teams in more detail as we progress with this report so we'll dive straight into the action. It was the debutants who got off to a flyer as they showed they could be real contenders in this tournament. Berkshirelona FC raced into a 3-0 first half lead. Huw Williams had the honour of scoring their first goal in Europe and didn't have to wait too long for his second. Nick Nunn added his name to the scoresheet as Berskshirelona FC were in control at the break. Fylde FC Old Boys hit back in the second half through Nathaniel Smithies but it proved to be a consolation as the damage was done in the first half of this game. Full time, 3-1 to Berskirelona FC.

In Game 2 of Group A at the 2025 Porto Sixes Tournament we had Deportivo Dooradoyle versus Flying High.

These were two teams who had both competed in our events for a number of years and this was the 5th time they'd appeared at the same tournament following the 2013 & 2017 Barcelona Fives, 2018 Gdansk Tournament and 2024 Mallorca Tournament. They met head-to-head on two of those occasions – both in Barcelona. In 2013 the Depo All Stars triumphed 3-0 but RAF Fylingdales exacted their revenge four years later with a 2-0 victory.

Here in Porto, 8 years on from their previous meeting, it was Flying High who hit the front. Aaron Brookes strike at the end of the first half gave them a crucial lead and boost going into the break. Could Deportivo Dooradoyle respond in the second half? Indeed they could. Kevin Shine, a regular scorer over the years for Deportivo Dooradoyle and the Alabama Hotpockets, was the man on target to level the score at 1-1.

There was to be no further addition to the score as the teams took a point each. Only time would tell if this was a point gained or two points dropped.

The first phase of the 2025 Porto Sixes Tournament would be decided on a group basis. There was two groups with a 7-team and 6-team group. Each team would play each other team in their group once and therefore 5 or 6 group games. After which, depending on position, they would progress to the Cup or Plate competition.

The teams finishing 1st and 2nd in each group would progress to the Cup competition. This was to be played as a knock-out phase with Semi-Finals and Final. The teams finishing in 3rd to 6th positions in each group would progress to the Plate competition. This was to be played as a knock-out phase with Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final. The team finishing 7th in Group A would be eliminated at the end of the group phase.

The next two teams to take to the field in Group A would be FC Prelada (Por) against Galacticos (Eng). For the Portuguese team it would be their first appearance in our events. They had a tough draw with their opening opponents as Galacticos were experienced in these events and put in strong performances in previous years (more on that later).

The two teams looked evenly matched after the opening exchanges but it was Galacticos who forged ahead. In a tight first half, a Riyad Uddin goal separated the two teams to put Galacticos ahead. After the change of ends it was Galacticos' defence that came to the fore as they protected their 1-0 lead with aplomb. That is not to say they were not threatening at the other end, they were. However, the FC Prelada defence also proved strong which meant this game was in the balance right up until the final whistle. A cracking first win for Galacticos, 1-0.
