Group B began with JCFC Seniors versus Sheffield Thursday. JCFC Seniors were strictly speaking making their debut in our tournaments but were very closely linked with the Giggs Boson team who had played in 4 previous tournaments in our events. 5 members of the squad today had played for Giggs Boson in their previous appearance at the 2021 Krakow Trophy. As a form guide, they opened up with a 3-0 win over Slovakia's GSF Drunkerz and a 5-2 win over Poland's Danish Crown. It was 3 wins out of 3 when they defeated PVDC Eindhoven 3-0. They lost their final game to Banerka 3-0 which meant 3 teams tied on 9 points at the top of Group B. Giggs Boson would finish 3rd on goal difference which meant they qualified for the Plate. In the Semi-Finals, they defeated FC Foreigntina 2-1. They met Alea Iacta Est in the Plate Final but narrowly missed out on glory, 1-0.

Today's opening opposition, Sheffield Thursday (more on them later) had impressed on their debut at the 2024 Mallorca Fives. The two teams looked pretty evenly matched in the early stages. Ultimately, defences were on top in the opening period and we reached half-time level at 0-0.

In the second half JCFC Seniors made the breakthrough with Connor Lawson scoring their first goal of the day. They were not ahead for long as captain Joe Morris scored to restore parity for Sheffield Thursday. The game would not finish level though as a Tom Killeen strike ensured JCFC Seniors would make a winning start to the tournament. Final score, 2-1.

FC Maroon came to Porto on the back of a successful 2023 Amsterdam Sixes. They had a tough start against the eventual champions, Summerhouse. They lost 3-1 before a 1-1 draw with The Shepherd's Arms (runners-up) got them off the mark. A 5-0 defeat to Fog Lane Albion set them back but they finished strongly with a 6-0 win over Scunthadam and a 2-1 win over E Block Europe. They finished 4th in the table and qualified for the Plate. They defeated their sister squad FC Dad, 2-0, in the Semi-Finals. They set up a repeat fixture against Fog Lane Albion. It was a tremendous change of fortunes as they turned 5-0 defeat from the group phase into a 1-0 win in the Plate Final. A remarkable run of 4 wins on the bounce to win the trophy.

FC Maroon first opponents in Porto were Eltham International. The two teams kicked off their respective Group B campaigns with a tightly contested 0-0 draw – a match that, while lacking in goals, showcased impressive defensive discipline from both sides. From the outset, it was clear that neither team was willing to give an inch. Solid positional play, effective communication, and well-timed challenges were on full display as both defences kept attacking threats at bay.

While both teams may have hoped to start with three points, the draw offered plenty of positives. With clean sheets in their opening fixtures, both teams can take confidence into the rest of the group stage, having laid a strong defensive foundation to build on for their tournament campaigns.

The final match of Round 1 would be Mitre FC B versus Schindler's Assist. The latter were making their debut and had a blank canvas upon which to paint their footballing artistry. They would need to get in their stride early as Mitre FC B were unbeaten in their opening fixtures at the 2023 Barcelona Fives and the 2024 Prague Tournament.

The two teams got their tournaments underway with a lively encounter that was settled in the first half. It was a game full of energy, with both sides looking to make an early statement. The opening period saw three goals, with Mitre FC B ultimately emerging 2-1 victors thanks to a clinical brace from Ben Hughes. Gabriel Jones replied for Schindler's Assist to keep his side in the contest, but it wasn't enough to overturn the deficit.

The second half saw both teams tighten up defensively, with fewer clear-cut chances as the tempo shifted to a more measured battle. Mitre FC B managed the game well, showing composure and discipline to protect their lead and secure all three points. For Schindler's Assist, there were encouraging signs going forward, but they'll be looking to convert promise into points as the group stage progresses.
