FC
Maroon came to Porto on the back of a successful
2023 Amsterdam Sixes. They had a tough start
against the eventual champions, Summerhouse.
They lost 3-1 before a 1-1 draw with The Shepherd's
Arms (runners-up) got them off the mark. A 5-0
defeat to Fog Lane Albion set them back but
they finished strongly with a 6-0 win over Scunthadam
and a 2-1 win over E Block Europe. They finished
4th in the table and qualified for the Plate.
They defeated their sister squad FC Dad, 2-0,
in the Semi-Finals. They set up a repeat fixture
against Fog Lane Albion. It was a tremendous
change of fortunes as they turned 5-0 defeat
from the group phase into a 1-0 win in the Plate
Final. A remarkable run of 4 wins on the bounce
to win the trophy.
FC
Maroon first opponents in Porto were Eltham
International. The two teams kicked off their
respective Group B campaigns with a tightly
contested 0-0 draw – a match that, while lacking
in goals, showcased impressive defensive discipline
from both sides. From the outset, it was clear
that neither team was willing to give an inch.
Solid positional play, effective communication,
and well-timed challenges were on full display
as both defences kept attacking threats at bay.
While
both teams may have hoped to start with three
points, the draw offered plenty of positives.
With clean sheets in their opening fixtures,
both teams can take confidence into the rest
of the group stage, having laid a strong defensive
foundation to build on for their tournament
campaigns.
