We were at the 2025 Porto Sixes Tournament Cup Semi-Final stage and from all the teams who began the day we were down to the final 4 – already an achievement for those who were still in the hunt for glory. The first Cup Semi-Final would see Galacticos meet Sheffield Thursday.

Galacticos were the top ranked side in the group phase with 6 wins out of 6. This was their 8 th appearance in our tournaments and the had qualified for the Cup on all 8occasions. They had Quarter-Final exits at the Algarve (2013) and Barcelona (2017), two Cup Semi-Final exits (Barcelona 2009, Lisbon 2022) and reached the Cup Final on 3 occasions in Valencia (2010) Lisbon (2018) and Alicante (2019). They were bidding for a fourth Cup Final.

At the other end of the experience spectrum was Sheffield Thursday. This was just their 2 nd appearance with us. They played in the Plate in Mallorca 2024 but already had graduated to the Cup in just 12 months. They finished 2 nd in a competitive Group B to secure their place here.

Galacticos were in determined mood here and it was they who hit the front. Huzaifa Hafesji had been in amongst the goals today and he hit his fourth of the tournament to put his team 1-0 up. Sheffield Thursday had shown resilience throughout the day though. When they had lost, they hit back next game with a win. Here they had gone behind but hit back with an equaliser. Joe Morris had put in a real captain's performance today and he struck his sixth goal of the day to level the tie at 1-1. Galacticos responded well though and regained the lead with Zaahir Patel on target.

The second half kicked off with the game delicately poised. As the half wore on the next goal grew increasingly important. Should Sheffield Thursday get it they could force the game into penalties or have the chance to win it given sufficient time. If Galacticos could get the next goal then it would be a long way back for Sheffield Thursday. When the fourth goal came it was Zaahir Patel on target for his second of the game. At 3-1 Galacticos had secured safe passage through to yet another Cup Final. It was a valiant effort for Sheffield Thursday and they had shown great progress from Mallorca last year. The future is bright for them.

So, who would play Galacticos in the Cup Final? Would it be travelling side JCFC Seniors or home nation side FC Prelada?

We'd mentioned earlier how competitive Group B was which makes JCFC Seniors victory in the group even more impressive. They finished the group phase unbeaten with 13 points from a possible 15 with 11 scored and just 3 conceded. FC Prelada were not far off statistically – they had 13 points (but from a possible 18) with 8 goals scored and just 1 conceded. FC Prelada could argue the stronger defence but JCFC Seniors would counter with the more potent attack.

One of the stories of the morning for JCFC Seniors was Tom Killeen who had a 100% scoring record as he'd found the back of the net in every game thus far. It was a record that just kept extending as he made the breakthrough in the Semi-Final. It was his seventh goal of the tournament and he'd put his team on course for the Cup Final.

JCFC Seniors had the luxury of a two goal cushion when Paddy Cox opened his personal account for the day to make it 2-0. What an important time to score it. The teams entered the break with JCFC Seniors still two goals to the good. The second half saw FC Prelada push forward with real intent as they looked to find a way back into the game. With time against them, they began to take more risks, committing players higher up the pitch and testing JCFC Seniors with a few probing attacks. However, the Group B winners showed exactly why they had topped their pool – their defensive structure was solid, disciplined, and unyielding.

JCFC Seniors absorbed the pressure with calm assurance, staying organised and limiting FC Prelada to only half-chances. Goalkeeper and defence worked in perfect harmony to preserve their clean sheet. Even as FC Prelada pressed in the closing minutes, JCFC remained composed and professional, seeing out the game with control and confidence. Their 2-0 half-time lead proved enough to seal a deserved place in the Cup Final.
