The
stage was set, let's get the action underway.
The Plate Final between Eltham International
and Fylde FC Old Boys proved to be a fitting
climax to an exciting competition. After a tense
and evenly matched first half that ended goalless,
the game seemed destined for another dramatic
conclusion. It was Eltham International who
thought they had won it late on when Jay Wallace
found the net with what looked like the decisive
goal. It was his first goal of the day and what
a crucial time to get it!
But
in keeping with the script of his tournament,
Ramzy Elftesi had other ideas. He was struck
down with cramp not long before but had risen
like Lazarus. It was incredible to see him come
on to the field. Even more incredible, with
what was virtually the last kick of the game,
he popped up with the leveller. Even more incredible
yet, it was his third clutch equaliser of the
day—having already saved his team in both the
quarter- and semi-finals. His cool finish sent
the match to penalties, the third consecutive
shoot-out for Fylde FC Old Boys. It was also
the first time Eltham International had conceded
in the knockout phase. So close to the end it
would have been a painful blow for Eltham International.
Both
teams were flawless from the spot, with a perfect
3-3 after regulation penalties. The drama intensified
in sudden death as the shootout extended all
the way to 7-7—still without a single miss.
Then came the decisive moment: it was down to
the goalkeepers, and Eltham International's
Tony Martinez emerged as the hero. He saved
from his opposite number, Tom Belger, to seal
the win. It was heartbreak for Belger, who had
been outstanding in previous shoot-outs, but
Eltham International celebrated a well earned
triumph as the 2025 Plate Tournament champions.
First
of all we offer our consolations to Fylde FC
Old Boys on a fine campaign. They had shown
grit and determination throughout the knockout
phase in particular and were so close to winning
back-to-back Plate titles. They had lost 2 penalty
shootouts in our events – both in Plate Finals
(Krakow 2017 and today). Football can be a cruel
game.
Eltham
International proved themselves worthy winners
of the 2025 Plate competition with a campaign
built on resilience, consistency, and moments
of real quality. Just the one defeat all day,
they grew stronger as the tournament progressed.
They had found the perfect formula - tight at
the back and clinical going forward. Stefano
Chagas was a standout performer with eight goals
to his name – he proved to be the top scorer
in the tournament so many congratulations to
him on this personal honour. Jay Wallace and
goalkeeper Tony Martinez delivered when it mattered
most in the final but it was strength in depth
across the squad with all players contributing
even if they didn't all make the headlines.
Their ability to handle pressure, particularly
in the knockout stages, showed the mental strength
of a team that fully earned their silverware.
Huge
congratulations go to our 2025 Porto Sixes Plate
champions – Eltham International.
