The
Cup Semi-Final between F.R.Ady and Colonel Getafe
was set to be a titanic clash. F.R.Ady had come
into the knockout stage with a perfect record,
boasting the most goals scored, the best defence,
and the superior goal difference in the tournament.
Colonel Getafe, meanwhile, had also won their
first four games but had suffered a narrow defeat
to CF Dons in their final group match, making
this a true test of resilience. The two teams
had met in Porto last year, with F.R.Ady (then
Football Rangers Hungary) prevailing 4-2, adding
extra intrigue and tension to this rematch.
The
first half was a cagey affair, with both defences
dominating and chances at a premium. It seemed
as though the teams would go in level at 0-0 until
Oliver Grossman struck right on the stroke of
half-time to give Colonel Getafe a 1-0 lead. This
was Grossman's seventh goal of the tournament,
putting him top of the scoring charts. The timing
of the goal gave Colonel Getafe could not have
been better with the Hungarians not having time
to respond before the break.
F.R.Ady
had the quality and patience to continue applying
pressure in the second half. Despite relentless
pressure from F.R.Ady after the break, Colonel
Getafe looked likely to hold on for the win until
the very final minute, when Karoly Csak broke
through to score his first goal of the day, levelling
the game at 1-1 and forcing a penalty shoot-out.
It was gut-wrenching for Colonel Getafe who were
so close to reaching a 2nd Cup Final.
The
shoot-out began with Levente Robert Tamas converting
for F.R.Ady, but Teddie Hannifan responded for
Colonel Getafe. The tension remained high as the
penalties were faultless with Szabo Csaba, Andrew
Simpson, Dominik Bodnar, and Henry Hanifan all
scoring to keep the sudden-death format looming.
In sudden death, Levente Lelek calmly slotted
home to give F.R.Ady a 4-3 advantage. Tournament
top scorer Oliver Grossman then stepped up for
Colonel Getafe, only to see his penalty brilliantly
saved by goalkeeper Szabolcs Konyha. In an instant,
Colonel Getafe were out, and F.R.Ady were through
to the final. The match showcased the drama and
unpredictability of knockout football, with F.R.Ady's
composure under pressure proving the difference
in a classic, nail-biting semi-final.
