Two groups down, two to go as we turn our attentions to Group C. The first game saw Grant Thornton drawn against The Mavericks. Grant Thornton made the journey to Valencia from Paris having made their debut in the 2012 Budapest Fives earlier this year as L'Albiceleste. For Valencia they have sponsorship and a name change. Back in May they made a superb debut winning their 6-team group without defeat before a Cup Quarter-Final exit to Hungary's Budapest Celtic Lions, 1-0.

The Mavericks were making their first appearance and it was our pleasure to welcome them to our tournaments. Grant Thornton were not so welcoming as they took a 1-0 first-half lead through Thibault Kerouredan.

The second half saw a Mavericks comeback as two goals from Manish Madhvani got them back in the game. A strike from Olivier Douard for Grant Thornton meant the comeback was not a winning one and after an enthralling encounter the teams would settle for a point each. Final score, 2-2.

Match 2 in Group C saw Leones FC meet Team GB. Leones FC were on home soil (or home 3G) and played regularly in leagues at our tournament venue. Home advantage did not turn into advantage on the pitch though as Team GB established a 1-0 lead by the break.

Team GB were on debut and their captain Indi Gill was leading the way. He scored the first half goal that put them in the ascendency and Gill again scored in the second period. Leones FC did spoil a clean sheet for Team GB but all-in-all it was a very satisfactory opening game for Team GB who secured a 2-1 win and three points.

The last two teams to get underway were Alphasights versus Deportivo. Alphasights first competed in our tournaments at the 2011 Krakow Trophy where they finished Plate Runners-Up in a 4-team round robin group. They enter the Valencia tournament on a fine run of form with 5-1 and 4-1 victories. Will they continue this form in Valencia?

Deportivo would hope not. They were on debut so we were not sure what to expect from them but they now had the chance to do their talking on the pitch. The campaign did not start as they would have wished though as they fell behind to a Rob Wootton goal. Jonny Patterson made it 2-0 before half-time and there was a lot of work for Deportivo to do.

Deportivo opened their account in the second half when Mathew Foster reduced the deficit to 2-1. The goal, for them, came too little too late and were unable to get back on level terms before the final whistle blew. It was an encouraging debut though.

For Alphasights it was a great start to the tournament as they extended their eurofootballfives.com winning run to three successive games.
