Going into the final round of games, we could have had a “Disgrace of Gijon” situation. Lindfield FC were due to face PFC. Both teams were on 10 points and only needed a draw to guarantee both of them would go through at the expense of Semen Padang. A win for either team would open the door for the Dutch to possibly leapfrog the losers of this tie.

If you are not familiar with the Disgrace of Gijon it was a World Cup game in 1982 whereby West Germany needed to win 1-0 against Austria for both teams to qualify at the expense of Algeria. West Germany scored early and the game was a farcical procession afterwards as both teams had the result they needed as the match was effectively fixed. Thankfully for Semen Padang there was no question that Lindfield FC and PFC were both going for the win.

Gerson Teixeira in particular was gunning for victory as he turned in a virtuoso display. He scored a hat-trick (the third of the tournament) as his goals proved to be the difference between the two sides. It guaranteed Cup qualification for PFC and also the Group B title giving them a tie against Group A runners-up instead of the Group A winners.

For Lindfield FC it meant they were sweating on the result of Semen Padang's game but they were still in a very strong position due to goal difference.

At the other end of the table we had the battle to avoid elimination and qualify for the Plate. It was RAF2 versus Bugiels Athletic. The loser of this game would be eliminated. The winner of the game would most likely finish fifth in the table and reach the Plate. Should the game end in a draw then Bugiels Athletic would qualify as they held a 1 point advantage in the table over RAF2.

RAF2 had begun well with 3 draws including games they could have and probably should have won. Since then two successive defeats had put them in serious trouble of going out in severe contrast to RAF1 and RAF3 who were in the top two in Group A. Bugiels Athletic came into the game on a high having defeated Semen Padang 2-1 and continued that momentum here. They took a 1-0 lead through Matt Styles and then secured the game with a Stef Antoci goal.

It was 6 points from a possible 6 at the business end of Group B and they would go into the Plate with form behind them. It was somewhat of a shock that RAF2 were out but 3 losses in a row was their undoing.

To dot the i's and cross the t's in Group B we had Semen Padang versus FC C(h)ampagne. What was riding on this game:

Semen Padang: They needed to win to join Lindfield FC and Dolce & Lallana on 10 points. They would finish third at worst on goal difference and needed a 6 goal win to overturn Lindfield FC's position. A 6-1 win would see the teams (Semen Padang and Lindfield FC) with identical goal difference and Semen Padang go through on the head-to-head record. A 5-goal win of 7-2 or higher would see Semen Padang go through on goals scored. A draw would see them finish fourth whilst defeat would see them slip to fifth. They were guaranteed a place in the Plate as the worst-case scenario.

FC C(h)ampagne: A win would see them move up to fourth place on 8 points. Draw or defeat would see them finish in 6 th position. They were also guaranteed a place in the Plate regardless of this result.

Semen Padang certainly needed the win more and a win is what they got. Goals from Balint Takacs and Thomas Jans (5 for the tournament) ensured the Dutch would finish with a victory but it was not sizeable enough for them to finish in the top two. They would finish third and occupy a favourable spot for the Plate Quarter-Final draw. FC C(h)ampagne would join them in the Plate.
