Welcome to Lisbon for the eighth edition of the Lisbon Tournament - 5-a-side football under the Portuguese sun. With 14-teams assembled we were ready to continue the eurofootballfives.com 2023 season - our 17th season of European action. We welcomed teams representing Brazil, England, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal and Switzerland.

First up in Group A was Tikki Masala (Ned) versus Sutton on Tour (Eng). The former were on debut in our events whereas the latter were making their third appearance in our tournaments (more on that later). Sutton on Tour had met Dutch opposition once before at the 2017 Amsterdam Fives and on that occasion lost 4-1 to Shaolin Soccer. Could they fare better against Tikki Masala?

Not on this occasion was the answer as the team from Rotterdam got off to the perfect start. Idiir Shkurti was the man who had the honour of scoring their team's first goal in eurofootballfives.com competition and it was a winning goal. A solid defensive performance plus Shkurti's goal meant a 1-0 win to Tikki Masala.

It is not often teams from the same club meet in eurofootballfives competition but, when they do, these derby matches often have a strange atmosphere – sometimes the games can lack a little intensity or sometimes the games can have a bit too much intensity with players determined not to lose to their tour-mates.

Usually, these games happen in the knock-out phase but with this game coming so early in the tournament it would be even more strange and perhaps even feel like a warm-up or training session. However, bragging rights were at stake for the rest of the Lisbon tour and beyond.

The two teams on display in the second game of Group B would both harbor ambitions of reaching the Cup competition. RAF had been there before (more on them later) and seem to have picked two evenly matched squads for RAF1 and RAF3 although more of their big hitters from previous tournaments seemed to be in the RAF3 squad.

It was another high quality encounter at the start of Group A and this game was also settled by a solitary goal. The goal went to Miguel Vicente who earned his RAF3 team all 3 points.

The 2023 Lisbon Tournament was to be decided on a group basis with two groups each containing 7 teams. The teams finishing 1st and 2nd in each group would progress to the Cup competition. The teams finishing 3rd to 6th in each group would progress to the Plate competition. The team finishing 7th in each group would be eliminated.

The final fixture in the opening round of Group A was Bugiels Rovers versus Fylde FC Old Boys. The former were on debut in our tournaments so we wish Bugiels Rovers a warm welcome to the fold. The latter were making a fourth appearance in our events a little later than expected. In 2019 they signed up for our 2020 Lisbon Tournament which had to be postponed due to Covid so they must be champing at the bit to finally get on the field in Lisbon in 2023.

It proved to be a worthwhile wait as goals from Ryan Errington and Liam Errington combined with a clean sheet ensured not only a solid 2-0 win but would also see Fylde FC Old Boys sit at the top of the fledgling table in Group A.
