Budapest Celtic Greens (Hun)

So, with 35 games under our belts we had just one more to go to decide the winners of the 2016 Budapest Fives. We had a great final in store and a fantastic crowd assembled by Pitch A to watch the game and see who would be crowned champions.

The Final would be contested by two home teams Meglepetes and Budapest Celtic Greens. Meglepetes were competing in their first Cup Final. For Budapest Celtic this would be their 4th. They had twice finished runners-up in the Budapest Fives (2012 & 2013) but had won the 2013 Krakow Trophy.

The game got off to a flyer with Tom Bean scoring almost directly from the kick-off for Budapest Celtic Greens. It was just the start they wanted and a nightmare for Meglepetes. The latter could take comfort that the team that scored first last year went on to lose so would hope they could recover as Csabagyongye had done 12 months before.

Domonkos Muranyi came very close to scoring an equalizer mid-way through the first half but he saw his effort hit the post and bounce clear. Not long after Marton Patik forced a good save from Matt Watson-Broughton in the Celtic goal. From the resulting corner Meglepetes equalized through Domonkos Muranyi with his 9th of the tournament. Budapest Celtic Greens were almost back in front when Nate Hajunder saw his effort tipped over the bar to earn a corner. From that corner though, Meglepetes broke quickly through Marton Patik who took the ball round the keeper to slot home for 2-1. A similar situation almost emerged from Budapest Celtic Green's next corner as Meglepetes broke again but Matt Watson-Broughton was out quickly to deny Zsombor Kafer.

The second half saw Meglepetes fairly comfortable in possession and when out of possession they seemed happy to keep Budapest Celtic Greens at arm's length and playing in front of them. Meglepetes seemed relatively untroubled but they only lead by one goal and were always vulnerable. Meglepetes were playing it sensibly though and not over committing when going forward until one crazy moment when their goalkeeper Viktor Madarasz took the ball forward and dribbled almost until the Celtic penalty area much to the delight of those watching where he squared a cross but there was no-one there.

There was to be another goal in the game and when it came it was a cruel way to decide the Cup Final. Budapest Celtic Greens goalkeeper Matt Watson-Broughton had enjoyed a good game so far making a number of good saves and he had appeared to make another from a Barnabas Kantor volley. Somehow the ball escaped the goalkeeper's grasp and it squirmed in for 3-1 with only a couple of minutes left.

Budapest Celtic Greens were unable to stage a late fightback and Meglepetes had done enough to secure the victory and the title of 2016 Budapest Fives champions.

Our commiserations to Budapest Celtic who were runners-up for the third time in 6 years but surely there was to be a win in the not too distant future.

There was also individual success for Domonkos Muranyi of Megleptes who claimed the day's Top Goalscorer award with 9 goals. Well done to you.

We send our congratulations to all the teams who participated in what was a great day's competition. We look forward to seeing you all again very soon.
