ACE & The Swagmen (Eng)

The second final of the day would see Polonia Limerick versus ACE & The Swagmen. With six games of football already under their belt the two teams would need to summon one last burst of energy to ensure they would be picking up winners and not runners-up medals in the presentation.

Let's have a look at the two teams' credentials for the Plate title:

Polonia Limerick (Pol)

Record today: Played 6, Won 3, Drawn 1, Lost 2.

Goal difference today: 18-8 (+10)

Current unbeaten run: 3 games.

Today's top goalscorer: Adam Gracz (6)

Clean sheets: 0

ACE & The Swagmen (Eng)

Record today: Played 6, Won 3, Drawn 0, Lost 3.

Goal difference today: 13-12 (+1)

Current unbeaten run: 3 games.

Today's top goalscorer: Daniel Burkwood (8)

Clean sheets: 2

The stats were interesting as it showed both teams on an unbeaten run of 3 games. Both teams had won 3 games although Polonia Limerick had suffered one less defeat (with their draw against FC Tpaktop) so they seemed well matched. If you look at the goal differences though this showed that Polonia Limerick may well be favourites with more goals scored and less conceded. Most of ACE & The Swagmen's goals came via Daniel Burkwood so if they could keep him quiet it would be easier for them compared to their opposition as Polonia Limerick had shared the goals around.

Polonia Limerick also had a Plate victory under their belts at the 2022 Barcelona Fives whilst ACE & The Swagmen had tasted defeat in the 2022 Lisbon Veterans Tournament. However, both those games had finished level in normal time with penalty shoot-outs deciding both those results.

The stage was set so let's get the action underway. Despite ACE & The Swagmen's recent defensive prowess (1 conceded in 3 games) it was Polonia Limerick who made the breakthrough after the early exchanges. It was the Polish #11 who put his team ahead and then the lead was doubled with Pawel Bladzinski on target fresh from scoring the winning penalty in the Semi-Final.

ACE & The Swagmen were now really up against it to get back into this final. In Lisbon last year they lead twice before being pegged back twice and their 3 wins today had all come after scoring the first goal. We summised earlier if Polonia Limerick could keep Daniel Burkwood quiet and the answer to that was no. His 9th goal of the tournament handed ACE & The Swagmen a lifeline going into half-time.

With such a narrow lead the first goal of the second half was likely to be crucial. Having drawn 2-2 in the Lisbon Plate Final last year, ACE & The Swagmen would dearly love a repeat of that scoreline to either give them a shot at penalties or even kick on for the win. It was however Edward Przekwas who claimed the next goal and with it secured a 3-1 win for Polonia Limerick and a second Plate title in 7 months for his team following that Barcelona success.

First of all we offer our consolations to ACE & The Swagmen on a fine campaign – close but no cigar for the second time for them. Hopefully third time lucky next time out.

Huge congratulations to our 2023 Mallorca Tournament Plate champions though – Polonia Limerick. A great performance from them.
