The last round of fixtures threw up some intriguing ties and the group had proved so close there were endless possibilities on who would win the group, who would qualify for the Cup, who would qualify for the Plate and how the teams would take their place in the draw for the knock-out phase. Teams really had to forget about the group context and just go for a win and let nature take its course.

First up was a huge game between GBS Reds and Rigford Seahawks Alpha. It was a clash between 2nd and 3rd place. A win for either team would guarantee Cup qualification, a draw or loss would leave them sweating. Rigford Seahawks Alpha could still win Group A with a win and a defeat for Inter Women combined with an 8 goal swing in goal difference.

Going into the game Rigford Seahawks Alpha were favourites having gone four games unbeaten after opening game defeat. GBS Reds were now without a win in three games and their form since the lunch break must have been a worry for the Czech's particularly as their leading strike, Veldhuizen, was now injured.

The teams reached the break in this one with nothing between them. Radim Steiner, who scored a hat-trick earlier in the day, bagged his fourth of the day for GBS Reds but Chris Jestico's goal ensured it was 1-1. The second half saw the Seahawks go ahead through Wayne Hayes. Dan Brayson made it 3-1 and when Wayne Hayes made it 4-1 the three points were wrapped up. Rigford Seahawks Alpha had gone joint top but needed Inter Women to lose by 5 to win the group. Either way, they were in the Cup. GBS Reds would have to seek out other results to see if they would be playing in the Cup or Plate.

So, would Inter Women lose by 5 against Goals Aloud? Anything is possible in this game although it was always going to be unlikely and require a Herculean effort from the Welsh and the English team to go off the boil. Goals Aloud had proved they were capable of big wins and big defeats so far today – Rigford Seahawks were hoping it would be the former.

Sadly for Goals Aloud it was to be the latter as Inter Women notched up another big win, this time by 8-0. After a circumspect start to the day Inter Women had now scored 21 goals in their last 3 games and were on fire. They were sending out a big message to their tournament opponents that to win the Amsterdam Fives they were the team to beat. There was a hat-trick for Daniel Powell, two more for David Foran plus a goal each for Ronnie Powell, Neil Pennington and Mark Swift. The result confirmed Inter Women as Group A champions.

Goals Aloud would ultimately finish in 6th place and take their place in the Plate competition for this afternoon's knock-out football.

The final game was to be AAK S&S versus Brighton and Hove Rockets. AAK S&S had been on the slide but could still make the Cup if they could pull out a result against the bottom team in Group A. Brighton & Hove Rockets were a rejuvenated side and had secured 4 points out of 9 to give them an outside chance of making the Cup themselves which would have been unthinkable an hour or so ago. With a 5 goal win they would leapfrog GBS Reds into 3rd place courtesy of goals scored.

It started well for the Rockets as they opened the scoring through Gary Cox and was to be a lead they maintained into the second period. In the second half a Joe Latimer double, taking him to 4 for the competition ensured that Brighton & Hove Rockets would finish the group phase on a high with two successive wins. It was not the 5 goal win they desired but it was enough for them to finish 4 th – not bad for a team that were 5 points adrift not too long ago.

For AAK S&S, the group started so well but 2 wins had been followed by 4 defeats and the one time group leaders had slid to the foot of the table. They had the Plate to look forward and could start the afternoon phase with a clean slate.

What a great group – we take our hat off to all teams who made it one of the most intriguing groups we've had to date.
