We arrived at the Plate Quarter-Final stage and we would shortly see eight teams reduced to four teams. To begin it was Ospina Coladas versus VNV. It was 3rd placed in Group A versus 4th Placed in Group B and as such you would imagine Ospina Coladas would be the favourites given the higher league placing.

Ospina Coladas secured 2 wins and 2 draws out of 5 games in the group phase and just missed out on the Cup by 2 points. VNV were just two points off their opponents but had 2 wins and 3 defeats from their 5 group games.

The game started well for Ospina Coladas with Christopher John amongst the goals again. VNV equalized through Yannick Van Dam and then moved ahead 2-1. Matthew Taylor bagged an equalizer for Matthew Taylor to keep his team in the tournament and earn a penalty shoot-out. The Dutch group's record in our tournaments was thus:

2017 Mallorca Fives Plate QF: Mannenliefde won 2-1 on pens v Ze'Argon (Fra)

2017 Mallorca Fives Cup QF: KML lost 2-1 on pens v FC Broxelona A (Eng)

2017 Mallorca Fives Plate Final: Mannenliefde lost 3-2 on pens v FC Shark (Eng)

2018 Algarve Open Plate SF: Elbersiktas lost 3-2 on pens v AC Motxo Int'l (Spa)

2019 Barcelona Fives Trophy QF: KLM won 2-1 on pens v Bracknell Vets (Eng)

As you can see, historically it was not great but they did have one win today in the Trophy already. VNV were unable to emulate their team-mates as Ospina Coladas won the shoot-out 3-2.

The second Quarter-Final saw FK Aliance take on AFC Underworld.

FK Aliance's previous eurofootballfives.com appearance saw them play in the Trophy. Their place in the Plate was a step up. AFC Underworld's previous eurofootballfives.com appearance saw them play in the Cup. Their place in the Plate was a step down. AFC Underworld had too many draws in the morning but they should not be under-estimated. They had 5 wins, 4 draws and just 2 defeats in their 11 previous eurofootballfives games. They went our in the Quarter Final stage last year to 2015 champions Club Esportiu Llefia.

We saw our first Plate Quarter Final go to penalties and the same was to happen here. This time after a 0-0 draw.

First up for FK Aliance was Kristaps Tavlavicius who duly scored. Jack Foord was first up for AFC Underworld who went to the goalkeeper's right to make it 1-1. Edgars Polkovs went high down the middle as the ‘keeper dived to his left, 2-1. Graham Williams was then the hero for FK Aliance as he saved Giulio Mezzetti's spot kick. Janis Kleperis then converted his penalty to send FK Aliance through.

We now knew the teams to compete in the first Semi-Final. In the lower half of the Quarter-Final draw it was FC Maroon versus Paralytic Athletic.

The first two semi-finals required a penalty shoot-out to settle matters and this one was no different. We had another 0-0 draw between two well matched teams in regulation time.

The first penalty would be taken by Jack Veness who was up against Ed Brangwin in goal for FC Maroon. Veness stroked it into the bottom left corner just beyond Brangwin's out-stretched right foot. Max Hill was then up against Joe Walker. Hill smashed it high and handsome down the middle for 1-1. Nanda McCarthy was the next man up for Paralytic Athletic – he went to the right. Brangwin was close again but the ball defeated his outstretched left hand this time. The breakthrough then came as James Alawi Yates saw his penalty saved by Joe Walker. It meant Alex Wood had the chance to win it for Paralytic Athletic – he sent Brangwin the wrong way as he hit the bottom left corner. Paralytic Athletic were through.

This was the third time in four years that FC Maroon had been knocked out on penalties – in the 2016 Riga Tournament Trophy Final, the 2018 Gdansk Tournament Plate Quarter Finals and now today in the Plate Quarter Finals again.

The final Quarter-Final saw Rodger Fingers take on Paralytic Athletic U23s. Rodger Fingers had only just missed out on the Cup competition on goal difference and were the top ranked of all the teams in the Plate. They had 8 points (along with Ospina Coladas but Rodger Fingers had a better goal difference).

Paralytic Athletic U23s could potentially set up a semi-final against their tour mates if they could overcome their opponents in this fixture. They had 7 points from their 5 group games with 2 wins and a draw. On their previous eurofootballfives.com appearance at the 2018 Riga Tournament they went out at this exact same stage, 5-3 to Spider Mans Ressies.

The surprise in this game was that a penalty shoot-out was not required to settle the tie. Rodger Fingers completed their victory in normal time thanks to goals from Raj Dhaliwal (x2) and Hardeep Marwaha. Bruce Helsey's third goal of the day would, sadly for his team, be their final game of the day. Rodger Fingers marched on.
