The 15th July 2017 was a memorable moment in eurofootballfives.com history as it marked our first ever Sixes tournament. It was such a success that we booked in the 2018 event immediately after the conclusion of that tournament. After almost 12 months of waiting we were keen to get this year's festivities underway.

It is often traditional for tournaments to kick off with the defending champions playing in the opening game of the tournament. In keeping with this tradition we had Vieze Vu (who played as Toros last year) to open up against Lostwithiel FC.

It is not always a foregone conclusion that the champions of the past will start the tournament with a victory – remember Omam-Biyik scoring for Cameroun against Argentina in Italia 90 and Papa Bouba Diop for Senegal against France in World Cup 2002?

There looked to be no such trouble for Vieze Vu as they opened up a 2-0 lead with Melvin Drouijer scoring twice for the defending champions. Jordan Cummings and Josh Cook would not let the champions have it all their own way. They each scored to rescue a very good opening point for Lostwithiel FC. Final score, 2-2.

Next up was Cheesecake FC versus John Lewis FC. John Lewis were on debut so this would be our first look at them. Cheesecake FC are the most capped team here in Amsterdam – they will be making an incredible 10th eurofootballfives.com appearance. It put them joint 5th on the all time list.

Cheesecake FC's most recent of those appearances was here at the Amsterdam Sixes last year. They performed well in a competitive group to finish in second place behind FC Letcom of Switzerland. There was a narrow 2-1 defeat to eventual winners Vieze Vu (playing as Toros) in the Cup Semi-Final. Both of those teams were also in Group A today. Cheesecake FC finished with a record of 3 wins from their 5 games, 10 goals scored and 5 conceded.

Cheesecake FC certainly had the experience going into this game and that experience paid dividends. They showed no mercy to their opponents as they raced into a 4-0 lead. Kevin Raphael got the ball rolling before goals from Justin Rees, Mark Nordenfeldt and Kevin Raphael's second of the game. In the second half Jamie Ingley put the icing on the cake as the game finished 5-0.

The final fixture in the opening round of Group A was another case of a team on debut (Ross Kemp FC) playing against a team with previous eurofootballfives.com experience (FC Letcom).

FC Letcom (Swi) were appearing at the 2018 Amsterdam Sixes having appeared 12 months ago at the inaugural event. They had a pretty good debut as they came stoming out of the blocks to record four wins from their first four fixtures – even a defeat in the last group game could not prevent them winning Group A. They would meet TEDO3 in the Semi-Finals but missed out on a debut Cup Final by the odd goal as they lost 1-0.

On the field in 2018 they played out a very evenly contested match against England's Ross Kemp FC. The referee blew for half-time with the scores level at 1-1. Hakin Dall'o (FC Letcom) and Ste Richardson (Ross Kemp FC) each scored their team's opening goal of the tournament. He blew for full-time with the scores at 1-2. Kieran Cherrie was the man with the winning goal. It was a superb start for Ross Kemp FC.
