FC Fylde Old Boys A (Eng)

As we entered the final Round of games we knew Skidmarks were group winners and La Morte O I Gladioli and Scotty Doesn't Know would not make the Cup. Those latter two still had to secure a place in the Plate (subject to results in Group A). Places 2nd to 4th were still very much up for grabs.

One of those teams trying to secure second position was Municipality of Raanana. The team from Israel could move on to 10 points with a win. This would assure them of a place in the Cup either by finishing second or by being one of the best third place finishers.

Scotty Doesn't Know could rubber stamp a place in the Plate with a win. A draw or defeat might be enough as long as they didn't slip to 6 th and as long as FC Fylde Old Boys B didn't win their final game in Group A (only the best 6 th placed team qualified for the Cup).

Despite being in fifth place Scotty Doesn't Know hadn't played too badly today – they had been in a tough group. They were competitive in this one and found themselves level at half-time, 1-1. Tony Wood's goal for the English team and Avinoam Bidani's goal for Municipality of Raanana cancelled each other out.

In the second half the extra quality of the Israeli team shone. It's a cliché that “the league table doesn't lie” and the second half went with the overall league table form. Avinoam Bidani and Oren Tavor both scored in the second half to win it 3-1 for Municipality of Raanana. We would see them play Cup football in the knock-out phase.

Scotty Doesn't Know would progress to the Plate.

The variables were being reduced with every game as we moved towards the conclusion of Group C. Next up was La Morte O I Gladioli versus Skidmarks.

With defeat for Scotty Doesn't Know, La Morte O I Gladioli knew they only needed a draw to finish in fifth position and therefore qualify for the Plate. They could even afford a 1 goal defeat. If they lost 3-1 they would finish with an identical record to Scotty Doesn't Know and in the head-to-head game they finished 1-1. If FC Fylde Old Boys B (in Group A) won their last game in Group B we would need a penalty shoot-out between to decide which of Scotty Doesn't Know and La Morte O I Gladioli would go through to the Plate in 5th. If FC Fylde Old Boys B lost in Group A then both would go through to the Plate in 5th and 6th so we would just toss a coin to see where they would fit into the knock-out draw.

Skidmarks were champions whatever but they had a chance to complete a group phase with a 100% record for the first time since their 2011 Valencia Fives title winning campaign.

Maybe with Cup qualification assured Skidmarks relaxed. Maybe La Morte O I Gladioli stepped up their game. Whatever the reason we had a surprise on our hands. A first half goal from Riemer Van De Velde and a second half goal from Stefan Wharton meant that La Morte O I Gladioli won it 2-0. It was only Skidmarks fifth defeat in 9 tournaments in the group phase.

The result secured fifth position for La Morte O I Gladioli.

The last game of the group phase would be Cheesefake versus FC Fylde Old Boys A. The two teams were separated by just 1 point. At kick-off they sat in third and fourth positions respectively. This was the battle for third position which, in turn, was the battle for the final place in the Cup competition.

This could be really interesting as here in Group C we had teams on 7 points and 6 points playing for third. In Group A, at the same time, we had teams on 7 points and 6 points playing for third. Group B had finished with third place there going to KPN Digital (on 7 points). Therefore, with the best two third placed teams qualifying for the Cup a haul of 8 points or more was the target.

Cheesefake currently sat on 7 points so ‘only' needed a draw. FC Fylde Old Boys A simply had to win.

FC Fylde Old Boys A put in a simply magnificent performance and at just the right time. In fact, we could call it a magnificent 7 performance. They were averaging 2.5 goals per game so far in Group C but produced a goal fest here. Nathaniel Smithies grabbed a hat-trick, Chris Brown scored a brace whilst Ramzy Elftesi and George Copeland each added to their tournament tally.

They did concede a couple (to Nicholas “Jess” Bromilow) but when you score 7 you can afford that little luxury. The result lifted FC Fylde Old Boys A above their opponents into third and they would qualify for the Cup. Cheesefake FC would qualify for the Plate.
