The eurofootballfives Veterans Tournament is a moveable feast. Following our debut here in Lisbon in 2013 we have taken in the veritable delights of Mallorca in 2014 & 2017, the Algarve in 2015 & 2018, a return to Lisbon in 2016 and Alicante in 2019. The eighth edition of our June Summer tournament was long overdue to the pandemic and we couldn't wait to get started.

Previous winners:

2013: Sao Marcos (Por)

2014: Palmesanos (Spa)

2015: Mini FC (Por)

2016: Sago (Por)

2017: FC Mahou (Eng)

2018: Mini FC (Por)

2019: Esparta (Spa)

2022: ???

First up in Group A was Los Amblos just as they had been in Alicante three years ago. Los Amblos are seasoned campaigners in these tournaments featuring in each edition since 2016. We will preview them in more detail as we progress with this report. Their opponents, FC Dad, were making their Veterans debut but had toured with us since 2010.

The two teams were looking evenly matched and the opening exchanges ended with the two teams locked together at 0-0. Los Amblos were hoping there would be no case of déjà vu from Alicante 2019 where they lost 1-0 due to the disputed award of a penalty which saw CT1 win 1-0. There was no such controversy this year as Julian Wilton (Los Amblos) and Rich Mason (FC Dad) both kept clean sheets. Final score, 0-0.

The first phase of the 2022 Lisbon Veterans Tournament would be decided on a group basis. There was one group with 5 teams and one group with 6 teams.

Each team would play each other team in their group once and therefore 4/5 group games. After which, depending on position, they would progress to the Cup or Plate competition.

The teams finishing 1st and 2nd in each group would progress to the Cup competition. This was played as a knock-out phase with Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final.

The teams finishing 3rd and 4th in each group would progress to the Plate competition. This was played as a knock-out phase with Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final.

The teams finishing 5th and 6th in each group would be eliminated at this stage.

The next two teams up on Pitch 5 were Les 5 Salopards and The Warriors. This game was evenly matched for the opening period until two goals in two minutes around the midway stage swung the game firmly in favour of Les 5 Salopards. Yanick Jista scored both goals. Paul Janman reduced the deficit to 2-1 a couple of minutes from time but there was not enough time on the clock for them to rescue a draw. Full-time, 2-1.

The final fixture in the opening round of Group A was a team on debut – Santa Maria (Por). They were up against AFC Shooters who were making their third appearance in our tournaments but were on debut in the Veterans section.

AFC Shooters 2 (or ‘B' in previous events) had a bright start on debut at the 2015 Algarve Open with a win in their opening fixture but then found life tough as they lost their next 3 all by just the one goal. They lost their last game 2-0 and qualified for the Plate. They met Mavericks in the Quarter-Finals and drew 1-1 in normal time but went out on penalties.

They fared pretty well at the 2017 Vilnius Tournament with 2 wins and 2 defeats. Those defeats came to 5-times eurofootballfives winners CIS Committee and 3-times eurofootballfives winners Skidmarks. They picked up wins against KRP FK (3-0) and Red Cow Belgrade (4-3) as they finished third to make the Plate. They drew 1-1 against VSG United but went out 2-0 on penalties.

They got off to another bright start here with JJ Monserat scoring in the third minute. A couple of minutes later Eric Origi doubled the advantage for the English team. Santa Maria then hit back with a goal from Joao Pereira a couple of minutes from time but any hopes of a comeback were quoshed when Oscar Lisboa sealed a 3-1 win.
