Round 2 started with Seagulls FC versus Meglepetes.

As we touched upon in Round 1, Seagulls FC were the second squad of East Compton Eagles and we last saw them on tour in June 2012 for the Berlin Fives. They had a pretty good group campaign with 3 wins and 2 defeats that helped them to third place in the table. In the Plate competition they went all the way to the final where they missed out on success to Czech side GBS Reds.

After Berlin, the players of the Eagles and Seagulls merged into one team as East Compton Eagles and progressed to the Cup Semi-Final at the 2013 Mallorca Fives and Cup Quarter-Final at the 2014 Amsterdam Fives. With a point under their belts they now faced a daunting task against the defending champions.

Meglepetes made a solid start with a 0-0 draw against Missing Magpies but, although early, needed to get amongst the wins to kick-start their title defence. The game proved to be another competitive one and we were still goalless at half time.

We were to get a goal in the second half. Cometh the hour, cometh the man and that man was Balazs Billein. His goal gave the Hungarian team a precious 1-0 win.

Budapest Celtic Greens were up next as they took on Missing Magpies. Both teams had taken a point against strong opposition in Round 1, could either kick on here?

Missing Magpies first stop on the eurofootballfives.com tour was the Amsterdam Fives in 2012 where they had an impressive debut. They finished 2nd in their 6-team group and were only beaten to the title by (now) 3-times eurofootballfives.com winners, Athletico Do Hollande. They went on to the Cup Semi-Finals and missed out on a debut final after defeat to El A Dees. The 2014 Barcelona Fives saw them draw a very tough group that included 2013 winners Los Swallacticos of NI and eventual 2014 winners Monexy of Ukraine. They finished a more than respectable 3rd. In the Plate competition they stormed to a 4-0 Quarter-Final win over Ireland's Balotellitubbies before a 3-1 defeat to (now) double Plate winners Naranjitos of Spain.

Missing Magpies most recent appearance was at the 2015 Berlin Fives. They got off to a flyer in their 6-team group with a 1-0 win over SV Zoo, a 2-1 win over 9 Nana Budds and a 2-1 win over DHFC. There was a dip in results at the end of the group phase with defeats to Titanium Hollyrollers and Pink Flamingos B. It meant they finished 3 rd of 6 teams but had still done enough to qualify for the Cup. It meant they would have a difficult Quarter-Final draw. They drew Tinniedad & Tobacco (here today in Group B) and went out 5-3.

Here in Budapest, Stephen Doogan was setting Pitch A alight with a quickfire hat-trick that won all three points for the Missing Magpies. A Boris Pavlovski goal for Budapest Celtic Greens proved to be a mere consolation as the English team ran out 3-1 winners.

To complete Round 2 we had Spider Mans & Eagle versus Maverick FC. Both these teams had competed at the 2015 Budapest Fives and the 2016 Krakow Trophy although they were yet to meet – until now.

Based upon history at those two tournaments you would make Spider Mans & Eagle favourites as they had reached the Cup Semi-Final and Cup Final in those tournaments whereas Maverick FC had reached the Plate Quarter-Final and Wooden Spoon. Today though, both teams came into the game level on a point each in the group table so there was all to play for.

At the end of the first half Mavericks had put in a good performance and found themselves level at 0-0. They were still to concede a goal in the tournament. After the break though Spider Mans & Eagle did find a way past the Mavericks defence as Nick McIntosh struck to put Spider Mans & Eagle 1-0 up. It was a goal that would earn his team all three points.

The result put Spider Mans & Eagle level on 4 points with Missing Magpies and Meglepetes at the top of the table but they were second on goal difference. Maverick FC were in 4th place but with three games to go were still well placed in the chasing pack to gain Cup qualification.
