The Cup Quarter-Finals saw the elite 8 teams of the 20 team draw come head to head to see which team would emerge as 2010 Algarve Open champions. We had 4 nations still with a chance of grabbing glory so would it be Holland , Portugal , England or Ireland celebrating at 5pm this evening?

The first Quarter-Final would see Ireland representatives Askeaton FC take on Breast Rummage Albion. Askeaton FC would normally be tournament favourites with a 100% group record but with the Dutch team drawing all the attention they were maybe sneaking under the radar a little bit. In this game, they received their sternest test yet as their English opposition managed to hold them to a goal-less draw. It was a 4 th clean sheet in 5 games for Patrick Noonan who was emerging as the goalkeeper of the tournament and he would have the chance to shine as Golden Goal extra time also proved goal-less and we reached the dreaded penalty shoot-out.

England teams are notoriously poor at penalty shoot outs so Breast Rummage Albion would need to shake off their country's reputation to progress here. However, Askeaton FC were no fans of penalty shoot-outs in eurofootballfives.com competition having lost the 2008 Prague Masters Plate Final on penalties and going out at this exact stage in the 2009 Algarve Open also on penalties. It was to prove third time lucky in 2010 though as they sent their English opposition crashing out 3-2 on spot kicks.

The second Quarter-Final on Pitch B was proving just as close as Sporting Lesbians and FC Seagrave reached 0-0 at half-time. This all England Quarter-Final would at least guarantee one England team in the Semi-Final draw. In the second half it was Group D Runners-Up rather than Group C winners who took the initiative as Matthew Allard's double strike put FC Seagrave 2-0 up. It was a lead they were not to look back from and they booked their place in the semi-finals where they would play Askeaton FC.

The third quarter-final of the Cup was the most one-sided of the four and showed exactly why Athletico Do Hollande were being touted as favourites. Portugal 's Olhanense who won the 2008 Premiership In… Portugal and finished 2009 Algarve Open Plate Runners-Up were swept aside in merciless style. Jerrel Fraenk scored the opening two goals of the game before Marvin Fraenk round off a fine 3-0 first half display. The second half continued in much the same fashion when John Hanst made it 4-0, Youssef El Ouasghiri made it 5-0 and Jerrel Fraenk completed both his hat-trick and the scoring in a 6-0 demolition.

The ‘reward' (note the inverted commas) for the winner of Whiteley FC and Water Boy of Portugal was to meet Athletico Do Hollande in the semi-finals. Whiteley FC went into the match, in our view, as favourites courtesy of the goalscoring exploits of Dale Matthews and winning Group D. Water Boy had followed two wins with two defeats so would maybe lack a little confidence. At half-time the two teams could not be separated, locked as they were at 0-0. In the second half it was Water Boy who upset the apple cart by scoring tree goals without reply. Ricardo Ferreira broke the deadlock before Flavio Pereira added a second and third to eventually win 3-0. A surprise no doubt and we had to say goodbye to Whiteley FC.
